Being a typical South Indian TamBrahm, sambar is nothing new to me. We have it everyday throughout the year… Over the years, my mother has perfected her sambar powder which is amazing. I love the aroma when she freshly grinds her sambar powder and it truly cannot be replaced by anything else.
Using Eastern’s sambar powder, we tried out pumpkin sambar, drumstick sambar, lady’s finger sambar along with a few others. Given below is a picture of drumstick sambar made using Eastern’s powder.
Aroma of the powder– There was a strong aroma of fenugreek and asafoetida which I absolutely adore. Apart from that you can also sense the coriander and chilli. It is very fragrant even after days of opening the pack. Although it was and should be kept in an airtight container to retain the aroma and flavour. I’ll give the aroma 8 out of 10
Taste and colour– The powder blends well with all vegetables and adds a lot of flavour to the dal that is added to sambar. The powder is a deep yellow-orange colour and it imparts a nice orange colour to the sambar once cooked. It goes well with quite an array of vegetables. A slight hint of chilli, and the profound taste of fenugreek and coriander provides the sambar with the essential flavours. The colour gets 8.5 out of 10 whereas the taste gets 8 out of 10.
Overall, a good product and not expensive for people who don’t make it everyday. 🙂
