This BBQ tofu burger is something which tofu haters should try because you might just want to change your opinion about it! Read on to know more about it because it sure did change my opinion. It is smothered so generously in BBQ sauce and also since it is marinated in a rub you can hardly taste the tofu but then again there is a slight taste which we cannot avoid but it is near to negligible. If you do not want to use tofu, you can also use a slab of paneer and use it just like the tofu slab.
I know, I know, tofu isn’t something which many of us like. You might think that it is so boring and tastes weird. Well, I used to think of tofu as something not fit for consumption because I hated it that much. Basically no one in my family likes tofu and when I received two slabs of tofu in that hamper I was so confused as to what to do with it. So I thought that since I have already received it, there is no shying away from it. I had been thinking to make a BBQ burger with paneer and there arose the idea to make it with tofu instead. When I planned to make this burger I had to convince my brother a lot to give it a try because he hates tofu more than me but hard work does pay off and he was okay to give it a shot! After I gave the burger to him, I watched patiently to see his reaction and to my surprise, he actually enjoyed it! 😮
Ingredients: (Serves 3)
- Burger buns- 3
- Firm tofu slab- 200g (Use a slab of paneer if you do not want to use tofu)
- Olive oil- 2 teaspoon
- Lettuce leaves- about 6-7
- Pickled cucumber and carrots- to serve (Recipe for it is given as a note at the end of the burger recipe)
- Cheese spread- 3 tablespoons (optional. VEGANS omit this)
For Dry Rub–
- Chilli powder- 1/2 tablespoon
- Paprika- 3/4 teaspoon
- Cumin powder- 1/2 teaspoon
- Ground black pepper- 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt- 1/4 teaspoon
For BBQ Sauce–
- Tomato ketchup- 1/2 cups
- Olive oil- 1 teaspoon
- Garlic- 1 clove; finely chopped
- Onion- 1/2 small; finely chopped
- Dijon mustard or English mustard- 1/2 tablespoon (Do not use any coarse mustard pastes as it doesn’t go well)
- Brown sugar- 2 teaspoons
- Worcestershire sauce- 1/2 teaspoon (If you do not have worcestershire sauce use 1/4 teaspoon of soy sauce)
- Chilli powder or paprika- 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt and pepper- to taste
For BBQ Sauce–
Heat a pan with olive oil and sauté onion and garlic till the onions turn translucent. Add all the other ingredients and mix. Add 2 tablespoon of water and simmer for 2-3 minutes till the mixture starts thickening slightly. Remove from heat and set aside with the pan.
For BBQ Rub–
Drain the tofu if it is in a brine and wash it to remove any excess brine. Drain and pat dry. If it is just packaged tofu then simply pat dry it. Slice the whole tofu slab lengthwise (along the width) into 3 parts, it should be a little over 1/4 inch thickness. Add 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil and massage the tofu till each part is coated with oil Add the dry rub ingredients to the tofu slices and massage it gently until coated evenly. Allow it to marinate for half an hour.
For BBQ Tofu–
Heat a flat skillet or griddle until hot and when you splash a bit of water on it, it should sizzle. Grease the pan with about 1/2 teaspoon oil and place 3 slices of the tofu and grill it over a low flame for 2 minutes on each side. Heat the pan with the BBQ sauce simultaneously. Once you have grilled the tofu slices on both the sides and place the grilled tofu slices over the BBQ sauce to coat it evenly. Heat it until the sauce thickens and warms the tofu. About 4-5 minutes.
Cut the burger buns horizontally and brush the three buns evenly with the remaining 1 teaspoon of oil and grill until golden brown. Spread 1 tablespoon of the cheese spread on each of the bottom (optional) and place about 2 lettuce leaves on that. Place one slice of the BBQ tofu along with a little extra BBQ sauce on that. Top with pickled cucumber and carrot and serve.
For instant pickled carrot and cucumber:
- Cucumber- 1/2; (skin and seeds removed and cut into julienne)
- Carrot- 1/2; small cut into julienne
- White vinegar- 1 tablespoon
- Sugar- 1 teaspoons
- Salt- to taste
Mix all ingredients together and allow it to infuse for 10-15 minutes. Use on top of the burger.
